Violence against Women

We get life once, and we should try to live it at our best. Live & let live others. Keep everyone around you happy, including yourself. Fight to get your worth, and don’t succumb.

It’s easy to quote beautiful & gutsy words, but it’s not that much easy to follow. When someone bears the violence everyday, when someone has to fight everyday, when someone gets circumscribed with such circumstances everyday & everywhere, it’s not really easy! And, when someone never raised her voice earlier but had been enduring the pain before it was realized that it’s not done, it’s not easy et al!!!  One gets apprehensive at each & every step while alarming the issue as the criminal isn’t single but in numbers.

Our traditions, customs and beliefs encompass the behavioral- pattern which promotes the philosophy of significance of male over female, and unfortunately it’s too deeply- rooted to root out of the system.

In our culture, a boy is supposed to cremate the parents. Thus, he holds an indispensable position in a family. Birth of a boy child brings back the forbidden festivals. So, everyone awaits him eagerly. Still, a girl’s family has to give dowry. Thus, it’s still distressing even if the girl is not considered to be a burden. A girl has to leave her parents after marriage, and…… she isn’t supposed to be a family-member anymore to take help from. Hence, parents are dependent on their son. And, all this accounts to ‘her’ abasement.

Consequently, a girl child gets deprived with emotions & food which summarizes her growth-factor. A boy chides, & even hits, her sister with no reason but just to rule over her. She isn’t supposed to reciprocate his rude demeanor. And, if she protests any mischievous behavior, even then she has to move her steps first to maintain good siblings- relationships. She has no right over the property of her parents as it is to be inherited to him. He gets food first, while cooking & serving food for ‘everyone’ isn’t his business. She may not enjoy any song while he could stare at the female in the song, even if he pretends to not finding it good enough.

When a male learns to rule over females at his home, he desires to rule over every next woman; & commits molestation & rape. His masculinity doesn’t allow him to bow in front of others, & to get any retribution; though he bows in front of one lady- ‘Devi Durga’.

I wish for a community here, which works for the betterment of the fairer-sex with some concrete steps. Which besides organizing events & workshops, I wish, demands for some changes in our laws: where a couple could move in any of the spouse’s house wherever they desire; where she has a right over the parental-property irrespective of her marital-status; where she could also cremate her parents; where a girl has to contribute to her parents’ old-age pension schemes, & any other suitable law which could help in bringing the equality.

Why I am emphasizing on implementing laws- because, our society (one of the criminals) doesn’t comprehend & accept something which seems a fantasy to them. For instance, if a couple decides to live in a female’s home, or if the husband decides to stay at home while his wife goes out for work, he gets derided by the society for being a slave under his wife. Implementation of laws could help them to accept it as a norm & to leave the decision to the couple.

This composition has not been written to hurt the sensitive community of my ‘opposite gender- male’. Excerpts of this composition aren’t fiction or any part of my creativity, but a Reality. It’s a disheartening situation which prevails in our society.

Help!

Protest!

  1. When you said that those criminals are in number, you are right. Actually what you said in your post is true, our society is nurturing it. We are taught from day one that male is better, he will protect you, however considering what's happening it's opposite. My parents feel I am more responsible as a daughter than my brother and I must tell you that I call my brother modern shravan kumar, he is that much respectful to my parents. But somehow my parents feel having a daughter is a bliss. I sincerely hope all parents think like this.

There is a lot of anger and honesty in your post, Gayatri and I respect that.

    1. Actually, that's the only reality, dear! Our customs don't allow to bring equality in the system. And, sigh, it takes time!

      Thanks for your support! :)
